Featured Food Blogger of the Week: Tempie Hughes of Healthier Dishes

Tempie is the voice behind Healthier Dishes blog. She enjoys creating and cooking real food recipes. By keeping her recipes simple, she hopes to encourage more people to get away from highly processed foods and start cooking homemade meals more often.

In her spare time, she also enjoys running and has completed three half-marathons, a 10k and a 15k race. Taking photos and traveling are also activities she really enjoys.

Tempie is currently working on a soon to be released ebook titled How to "Start a Food Blog on a Budget." Her own food blog was started on a tight budget, and she wants to share her knowledge with others who might be thinking of starting one.

1. Your website has such a varied and amazing content. It must require a lot of work! Are there any tools or systems you use to maintain and sustain your blog?

First of all, thanks for the compliment! There are a few WordPress plugins that I use to help with my blogging. One of my favorites is the SumoMe plugin. It makes it super easy to share content, check my Google Analytics, and has a bunch of other features. I also have one really old school "tool" that I like to use as well. I write down all of the recipes I'm currently testing or recipes ideas I have in a standard wide rule notebook. I just love using good old fashioned pen and paper!

2. On a busy night, what meal would you cook for your family that didn't take up that much of your time?

I have a few 30 minute meal recipes on my blog. One of my go-to dishes would be my Andouille Sausage and Pasta Skillet. It's a spicy, delicious one-pot meal that is super easy to make and clean up is a breeze. My Easy Vegetarian Chili or Weeknight Chicken and Black Bean Chili are also a couple of busy night faves.

3. Which city have you visited that had the most memorable cuisine?

Gonna have to go with Austin on this one! There is a crazy amount of delicious food in that city. It literally has something for everyone. Whether you want really good Tex-Mex, Barbecue or something a little on the healthier side, Austin has it all.

4. What is that one kitchen tool you have purchased within the last year that you couldn't live without now?

My kitchen shears. From cutting the backbone out of a whole chicken, to chopping herbs and canned tomatoes, they are a very handy tool to have around. I especially love using them to slice chives and scallions quickly. You can hold them right over your dish to garnish!

5. If you could run any marathon today, what marathon would it be and why?

I don't have any current plans to run a full marathon, but never say never, right? There are a couple of places that would be on my bucket list if I did. Either the Big Sur or Kauai Marathon would be at the top of my list. Gotta have some gorgeous views in order to distract myself for that distance!
