Featured Food Blogger of the Week: the Sisters Behind Six Sisters Stuff

In February 2011, we started our blog sixsistersstuff.com. After years of living close to one another, we were being pulled in many different directions- one sister moved to the West coast, another sister followed her husband to medical school, one moved away to college, and another sister had just lost a baby.

We needed each other now more than ever and we used our blog as a way to stay in touch. We are all busy, whether it’s with our kids, jobs, school, husbands, community involvement, or something else eating up our time, so all the recipes and projects you will find on this blog are quick and easy!

Our recipes are family favorites that use ingredients commonly found in your pantry. Our crafts and home decor projects can be made with little or no money. We don’t claim to be amazing chefs- we just know the importance of feeding your family a home-cooked meal and sitting down to eat it together.

Our mom and dad taught us so many great values and we are thankful that they instilled the importance of family time in our lives. Even the busiest of people can make the food and project ideas we share, which will give you even more time to spend with your family and loved ones.

1. Let me start by asking – how was it like to grow up with six sisters?  What is the best thing about being a member of a big family?

Growing up with six sisters was just as exciting as it sounds! We were all pretty close in age so we were always doing things together. We all played sports (our dad had no sons so we didn't have a choice) but we loved helping our mom cook, playing with barbies, and going shopping like most girls do.

Like most sisters we fought over clothes, and boys, and bathroom space. Our mom told us one day that we were all going to be best friends, and we definitely didn't believe her. But as soon as we all started moving away and growing up, we realized we couldn't live without each other.

2. You all seem to be fantastic cooks! How did all of you learn how to cook? Who introduced you to the art of cooking?

For as long as I can remember my mom has cooked dinner every single night. We didn't have a lot of money growing up so going out to eat wasn't usually an option. I remember coming home from soccer practice or piano lessons and just sitting at the counter while my mom made dinner and talking about my day.

We all did this for years, just watching her cook. She would teach us as she went or give us small assignments in the kitchen like slicing the olives or stirring the pot on the stove. Eventually we all realized that food is what made all of us so close. Eating together became the part of the day that we all looked forward to. Most of the recipes we share are recipes that we grew up with, or that our grandma (who was equally as good at cooking) would make for us growing up.

3. What is the story behind your blog or website? Who thought of creating one?

So this was kind of shared in our introduction, feel free to use any of that information here too! Our sister Elyse started the website in 2011 after we all began moving away. We were all across the country, some of us still going to school, one sister had lost a baby, and the others were following their husbands to medical school and out of state jobs.

We first started it to stay in touch, since unlimited texting and minutes were not yet a thing. Eventually we realized that people we did not recognize were coming to our site, using our recipes and adding comments to some of our posts. That's when we decided this was something more than just a way to communicate, but a way that we could share what we were passionate about.

4. I see you have your own cookbook and eCookbooks, but have you considered writing and publishing a DIY home décor book – one that combines all your best DIY tips?

We actually have never thought of creating a DIY book. We are very passionate about food, and unfortunately only a few of the sisters are passionate about DIY. Easy family recipes have kind of become our main focus, along with traveling tips and fitness. However, we do love sharing a good DIY when we find one. We don't think we are qualified to write a book about it though!

5.  Have you all considered partnering up and putting up your own restaurant?

Haha, this is probably our most frequently asked question. The thing we love most about blogging is that we can share what we love while still being stay at home moms and students -(working in our pajamas every day haha)  Nothing is more important to us than family, and we can't imagine making ourselves even more busy by opening up a restaurant! It would be very fun though!
