Featured Food Blogger of the Week: Tieghan Gerard of Half Baked Harvest

Tieghan Gerard started reading food blogs when she was 13 years old and started cooking when she was 15.  Since then, their family’s kitchen became her domain.

About four years ago, she started her website Half Baked Harvest which has been featured in numerous websites and news outlets: Better Homes and Gardens, Crate and Barrel, Williams Sonoma, Bon Appetit, and Fox News Magazine, just to name a few. She is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and has been featured countless times in The Kitchn.

She’s recently completed her new home which you can read all about here.

1. It’s amazing what you have achieved at such an early age – 20 and on your own and running a really successful blog.  What are some of your goals in the next five to ten years?

Thank you! I am actually 22 now, but was 18 when I started. In the next five to ten years, I hope to grow the blog into a larger site for people to come not only for recipes and stories, but entertaining advice, how-tos and fun seasonal crafts. I would love to start hosting workshops for readers interested in photography.

2. I see you love photography as much as you love food and cooking.  If you were to choose a full time career between a professional chef and a professional photographer, which one would you choose?

Professional Photographer. Being a chef would be scary! I love cooking, but with photography I can do both cooking and photographing.

3. What are your favorite types of dishes to prepare and why (desserts, pies, vegan etc..)?

hmm, i love to bake desserts and make fun dinners, but I think my favorite thing to prepare is brunch foods. I love brunch!

4. How crucial are issues of food waste and local sourcing are to you? What is your policy when it comes to cooking?

I try to eat local as much as possible. It can be hard living in the Colorado in the mountains where it goes below freezing most nights of the year. In general though, I love to cook seasonal as much as possible. Berries in the summer, pumpkin in the fall, etc.

5. How tough a decision was it to make a choice between going the traditional route (college) and pursuing your passion? And why did you make the choice you made?

To be honest, I didn't really make the decision, it just happened gradually overtime. Once I started the blog, I just never stopped and as it grew, the more time it took up and the more it grew into a business. I do have and associates degree, but school was never something that excited me.
